Portraits in Oil
View this Collection . . .

Although portraiture is the most demanding and time-consuming subject matter, it is the most enjoyable for me because of the joy that it brings to the subject, family and client. I am always surprised to find myself toiling away on a portrait, wondering whether I am getting anywhere, only to suddenly have the portrait 'spring to life' at some point. The portraits in this collection have been painted either by commission, or just for my own enjoyment if I was particularly taken by a face or a pose.

This collection includes portraits done in graphite pencil and pastel pencil (for the highlights) on toned paper.

I am available to be hired to draw portraits at parties, conferences, etc. I usually charge by the hour, and complete 3 portraits per hour. The price includes the portrait and a mat in a sealed package.

Figurative

What is figurative art? Sometimes it's hard to determine whether a painting is a 'portrait' or a figurative work. More often than not, a portrait depicts a person looking at the artist, whereas a figure painting may show the subject 'doing something,' or perhaps just off in thought, but apparently unaware of the artist. There are exceptions to these criteria, however. One of the first figurative works which inspired me was Jan Vermeer's "The Milkmaid," which my grandmother had hanging in her home. Because of my musical background, you will find several paintings featuring musical instruments in this category.

Nudes

I have long admired the nudes of artists like Michelangelo and Bougeareau, and of living masters such as Jacob Collins or Anthony Ryder. This category includes sketches and finished drawings. The sketches were made from life in art classes, usually in no more than 20 minutes, and are generally small, about 11x14 inches. The more developed drawings range in size from 11x14 to about 18x24. All the drawings are in pencil highlighted with white charcoal pencil.

Oil paintings soon to come.

Land and Sea

My earliest paintings, and most of my paintings in my youth, were of land and sea. I was taught initially in a very impressionistic style, but eventually came to desire more detail in the paintings. Although I occasionally dabble in landscapes and seascapes now, I am rather intimidated by the excellent work of such artists as Clyde Aspevig and many other plein art painters. One of these days perhaps I'll venture out into that hot Florida sun and do some paintings out of doors.
